Abstract
Current signal processing techniques for passive sonar are limited by their simple plane wave mechanics assumptions. Next generation systems, if they are to offer significant performance improvements, must account for the complex propagation conditions that exist in the ocean. To this end DSR proposes an adaptive technique to perform localization of contacts using the highly complex acoustic propagation inherent in littoral waters. DSR will focus on the Advance Deployable System (ADS), leveraging any and all resources to provide maximum cost-effectiveness. The Phase I effort will derive and analyze the proposed adaptive technique, test algorithms through comprehensive simulation, and document results. In addition, DSR will develop appropriate system and operator interfaces and make recommendations for continued research.
