Abstract

SQQ-89 capabilities include pulsed and continuous active sonar, torpedo recognition and alertment, towed array passive sonar, sonobuoy processing, and the Undersea Warfare Control Functional Segment (UCFS) responsible for the control and launch of over-the-side and vertically launched torpedoes. The UCFS operator, referred to as the Undersea Warfare Combat System Operator (USWCSO) must execute ASW contact/tactical information management (that we refer to as Solution Development) and engagement planning and control (that we refer to as Weapons Control) to successfully meet warfighting objectives. Solution Development uses contact data from AN/SQQ-89A(V)15 acoustic sensors, as well as from non-acoustic and off-platform sensors, to develop an estimate of the contact state solution (i.e. its range, bearing, course, and speed), as well as identification information (e.g. ship or submarine, friendly or hostile). To address the enormous complexity of Solution Development, the Navy has developed and deployed numerous display format and tactical decision aids for use by the Undersea Warfare Combat System Operator (USWCSO). Gaining and maintaining USWCSO Solution Development competency and proficiency has been and continues to be a challenge. This Phase II SBIR proposes to build a Solution Development Adaptive Trainer (SDAT) to address this issue.
