AbstractThe project aims to develop a new light-weight generator set for 3 to 10 kW of power, at 120 Vac and 60 Hz, using an ultra-high-speed diesel engine by D-STAR Engineering, an ultra-light, high-speed generator and VSCF technologies by BF Goodrich Aerospace - Engine Electrical Systems Division, and a composite noise-encapsulation housing designed with the help of Center for Composite Materials at the University of Delaware. The proposed engine and the electrical system modules are projected to weigh about 25-30 lb each, for lifting and hoisting by one person, and the entire generator set is expected to be lifted and hoisted by two persons. The system is designed to use Diesel and JP8 fuels, and is also projected to have no visible smoke, very low noise and reduced Infra Red emissions. Scope of work for the project includes conceptual development and layout for the system, preliminary design of the subsystems, identification of components for the subsystems, selection of materials and processing technologies, projection of performance, cost, benefits and risks, and definition of Phase II plans for detailed design, fabrication and testing.
