Abstract
THIS PHASE I PROGRAM PROPOSES FIRST TO DEMONOSTRATE THE FEASIBILITY OF PRODUCING A CERAMIC PARTICULATE-REINFORCED SUPERALLOY MMC, AND SECONDLY TO SHOW THAT THE NEW MATERIAL CAN FUNCTION USEFULLY FOR STRUCTURE OPERATING UP TO 2000 DEGREE (F). THE PROGRAM WILL FOCUS ON USE OF INCO 718 AS A MATRIX METAL WITH REINFORCEMENT OF TIC AND/ OR A1203. HOT PRESS SINTERING WILL BE USED AS THE CONSOLIDATION TECHNIQUE WITHA GOOD PORTION OF THE PROGRAM DEVOTED TO DEVELOPING FUNCTIONAL TOOLING FOR USE AT THE VERY HIGH CONSOLIDATING TEMPERATURE. ROOM-TEMPERATURE TENSILE PROPERTIES, DENSITY, TIME-TEMPERATURE TESTING, AND ULTIMATE TENSILE TESTING AT 2000 DEGREE (F) WILL BE RELIED ON TO SHOW MERIT OF THE NEW SUPERALLOY MMC. A FINAL REPORT BE PREPARED, INCLUDING RECOMMENDED TASKS FOR THE PHASE II PROGRAM.
