Abstract
THE PROPOSED PROGRAM RELATES TO THE INVESTIGATION OF THE PROPERTIES OF THE PASSIVATING FILM ON THE METAL IN ALKALI METAL-OXYHALIDE SYSTEMS WHEN THE OXYHALIDE CONTAINS A VALVE METAL SOLUTE. THE PURPOSE OF ADDITION OF THE VALVE METAL IS TO CHANGE THE PASSIVATING FILM TO A CONTINUOUS THIN CONDUCTIVE FILM CAPABLE OF INHIBITING METAL CORROSION. THE PRESENCE OF SUCH A FILM WOULD MAKE PRACTICAL SAFER, HIGH ENERGY/POWER DENSITY PRIMARY BATTERIES. UNDER THE PROPOSED PROGRAM, ECO WILL PREPARE OXYHALIDE ELECTROLYTES CONTAINING SELECTED VALVE METALS (AS CHLORIDE SALTS), AND TEST THE STABILITY OF LI AND CA IN SUCH SYSTEMS. THOSE ELECTROLYTES SHOWN TO PROVIDE FILMS INHIBITING METAL CORROSION WILL THEN BE TESTED IN LABORATORY CELLS. THE ANODE FILMS FORMED IN SUCH CELL TESTS WILL BE EVALUATED USING A TECHNIQUE BASED ON THE MEASUREMENT OF GALVANOSTATIC TRANSIENTS.
