Research Institution
65369 The commercial introduction of electric and hybrid vehicle technologies has been limited by the performance and high cost of power sources and energy storage devices. This project will develop lithium-based batteries with improved performance, extended life, and significantly reduced cost for electric and hybrid vehicles. Specifically, advanced nanocomposite based anodes for affordable, high performance Li-Ion batteries will be developed. In Phase I, novel Si nanostructures will be fabricated via an effective and inexpensive process. The electrochemical characteristics of the material and its suitability for anodes in Li-based electrochemical cells will be determined. Experimental Li-ion cells will be fabricated and evaluated to demonstrate the performance potential of the new anodes. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: The new anodes should result in more affordable, high performance Li-ion batteries for use in electric and hybrid vehicle propulsion. The improved batteries should be equally suitable for portable power applications of military and consumer products such as cellular telephones, lap top computers, cameras and power tools.
