Abstract
High speed integrated starter generator (ISG) is a critical accessory for oil-free turbine engines. When located directly on the turbine shaft in the high temperature environment, the ISG eliminates any need for gears and makes the turbine engine compactwith reduced maintenance. The present proposal addresses the design and development of an ISG capable of operating to 63000 RPM and providing 30 kW power in generate mode, and 10 Ft.Lb. starting torque in start motor mode. Also considered is a completerange of ISG's for 5 kW to 30 kW power range, using similar components. The 2 year program will finalize the designs of 30 kW and 5 kW ISG's based on the Phase I activity, fabricate the units, and test and demonstrate them in a set up designed to mimic thehigh temperature and high speed environment. Also included is the controller design, development and demonstration to provide 28 VDC, and 270 VDC electric power output to Mil-STD-704E. The controller is based on the use of high speed DSP technology toprovide excellent steady state and transient performance. High power density, and operation at high speed and high environmental temperature to 500 degree F will be demonstrated for reliablity and aerospace quality electrical performance. High reliabilitywill demonstrated through appropriate tests and analysis.The main benefits are: high power density and compact design, multiple power output, low maintenance and high reliability at low initial and operating cost. The military applications include: generalcommercial program or GAP engine, EJ-22, UAV for Army and Navy. Non-military applications include distributed electric power generation, and high speed compressor drives.
