Abstract
THE SYNTHESIS OF FOUR STERICALLY HINDERED ALIPHATIC DIAMINES BY CHEMICAL AND ELECTROCHEMICAL METHODS IS PROPOSED. THESE PRODUCTS MAY FIND USE AS CURING AGENTS FOR EPOXY RESINS WITH UNIQUE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES. THE SYNTHETIC APPROACHES ARE BASED ON WELL-FOUNDED CHEMICAL PRINCIPLES, AND THE DESIRED COMPOUNDS WILL BE PROVIDED IN HIGH YIELD AND PURITY, EASILY SEPARABLE FROM ALL OTHER REACTION INTERMEDIATES. THE METHODS DEVELOPED WILL UTILIZE INEXPENSIVE REAGENTS, AND CAN BE READILY SCALED UP TO PRODUCE LARGE QUANTITIES OF MATERIAL. PHASE II WILL EXTEND THESE STUDIES TO CREATE A SERIES OF MORE HIGHLYFUNCTIONALIZED AMINES THAT MAY HAVE SUPERIOR PROPERTIES TO THOSE INITIALLY PROPOSED.
