Abstract
TECHNOLOGY IS RAPIDLY DEVELOPING HERE AND AT WOODS HOLE OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTION TO PROVIDE FAST PROFILING CONDUCTIVITY TEMPERATURE DENSITY (CTD) SYSTEMS. SENSOR DATAQUALITY AND PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY HAVE NOT KEPT PACE WITH VEHICLE DEVELOPMENT. THIS PROPOSAL OUTLINES APPROACHES TO ACHIEVE FAST RESPONSE, TIME CONSTANT MATCHING, SPECIAL COMPATIBILITY, AND AT-SEA CALIBRATION WITH NBS TRACEABLE STANDARD. CERAMIC CONDUCTIVITY AND TEMPERATURE SENSOR CONSTRUCTION AND FILM DEPOSITION OF SENSORS PERMIT SMALL SENSOR SIZE FOR FAST RESPONSE AND INSERTION INTO TRIPLE POINT CELLS OF WATER AND GALLIUM TEMPERATURE STANDARDS FOR AT-SEA CALIBRATION. MICROPROCESSOR STORED CALIBRATIONS LINEARIZE AND RESPONSE MATCH SENSORS. PROCESSING TECHNIQUESPROVIDE AT-SEA DATA CHECKS TO ALLOW MORE ACCURATE AND COST-EFFECTIVE DATA THAN ARE POSSIBLE THROUGH TODAY'S TECHNOLOGY WHILE REQUIRING LESS SKILLED OPERATORS.
