Abstract
THE OBJECTIVE IS A COMPACT, RELIABLE AND INEXPENSIVE METHOD FOR SAMPLING LARGE VOLUMES OF AIR RAPIDLY TO DETERMINE THE CONCENTRATION OF AIRBORNE EXPLOSIVES. THE APPROACH INVOLVES THE USE OF A MULTIVORTEX PRECIPITATOR CAPABLE OF EFFICIENTLY REMOVING FINE PARTICULATES AND LARGE MOLERCULES FROM THE AIR AND COLLECTING THEM FOR CONVENIENT ANALYSIS. DURING PHASE I, A PROTOTYPE WILL BE TESTED FOR COLLECTION EFFICIENCY AND THE RESULTS WILL BE COMPARED WITH THEORETICAL PREDICTIONS. SCALING LAWS WILL BE USED TO DEVELOP AN ENGINEERING PROTOTYPE FOR DETECTION OF REAL AIRBORNE EXPLOSIVES DURING PHASE II.
