Abstract

Terrorist attacks involving the use of proliferated radiological and special nuclear materials pose a potential threat to U.S. citizens and service members. Early detection of such materials and devices made from them is a critical part of the U.S. strategy to prevent these types of attacks. DARPA’s SIGMA program is developing smaller, lower-cost and more sensitive detectors, along with innovative mobile, wide area deployment and radiation mapping/monitoring strategies. To develop radiation maps the location of the radiation measurement is essential. TRX is supporting this program by providing a the capability to track personnel carrying SIGMA mobile detectors that operating in indoor and underground facilities where GPS is unavailable. In the prior phase, TRX developed a prototype capability to model and track in underground structures and integrated our NEON Location Service into the SIGMA system. The integrated system performance and scalability was demonstrated showing the feasibility of tracking and mapping radiation in GPS denied areas as part of the first large scale, city wide test of SIGMA Washington DC trial in October 2016. In Phase II, TRX will continue to improve the accuracy, scalability, and usability of the NEON Location Service and support SIGMA deployments.
