Abstract
The objective of the proposed efforts is the development of a novel high energy reserve type lithium ion battery (LIB) based safe power source for gun-fired projectiles that can survive launch setback accelerations of up to 70,000 Gs and capable of providing power for weeks at very low temperatures as required for military operations. The proposed concepts also allow the development of highly safe LIBs for weapon platforms, military vehicles and other mobile and stationary platforms with shelf-life of over 20 years, and that can survive high flight vibrations of in excess of tens of thousands, and be stored at temperatures from -55 degrees C to 125 degrees C. The proposed groundbreaking LIB fast charging and performance enhancement technology allows the developed batteries to be charged rapidly at temperatures that are even lower than the required -55 degrees C and will also rapidly bring the battery performance to the room temperature levels. The proposed concepts have the potential of significantly advancing power source technology for gun-fires munitions and all other battery powered weaponry as well as for all mobile and stationary platforms. The proposed low temperature fast charging and performance enhancement technology will have a significant impact in commercial market.
