American warfighters require adequate real-time information about radiation exposure to make appropriate triage and engagement decisions in the aftermath of a nuclear blast. Present dosimeter technology including PIN diodes for prompt neutrons and RadFETs for prompt gamma radiation can provide this information more accurately if appropriately upgraded and utilized. In this work, RMD’s dosimetry and materials experts will team with experts at Mirion and utilize existing platforms to make an upgradable system with an order-of-magnitude improvement in sensitivity and accuracy over the existing system. The Phase-1 effort used existing legacy sensors allowing us to test a high TRL device to calibrate temperature and process dependent fluctuations to improve the accuracy, while capitalizing on advances in MOS FET and PiN diodes for the next generation of burst dosimeters. This calibration process provides improved performance for new and existing battlefield dosimeters at a low cost to the government for its implementation. We have established a clear path to manufacturability and deployment of both the upgrade and a completely new unit for both military and first responder use.
