Abstract

Phase separating blends of epoxy and liquid polymers will be used as impact resistant adhesives.These materials feature a novel mechanism for absorbing mechanical energy that involves local movement of nano-sized strands of highly crosslinked epoxy through viscous liquid polymer domains, resulting in both shear and flow within the liquid.The mechanism is very insensitive to temperature and strain rate and will overcome the limitations of current state of the art epoxy toughening methods.
