Abstract

We currently throw away billions of tons of carbon in the form of CO2 each year, wasting a potentially valuable resource. Opus 12 is developing a process to recycle this carbon back into useful chemicals and fuels that drive the global economy. Our unique catalyst formulation enables the use of a polymer-electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzer design, which is low- cost, manufacturable, and scalable due to over 50 years of commercial development for water splitting. Through a Phase I award, we seek to further improve performance by developing catalysts with new morphologies and supports with the ability to synergistically enhance catalyst activity. Performance enhancements will ready the technology for scale up during Phase II to commercially relevant system size.
