Abstract
It is inherently difficult to derive information from a free space optical (FSO) communication link unless you have access to the beam path. We will work to develop a targeted means of quickly measuring a laser beam direction from outside the beam path that exploits single photon detectors (SPDs). Single-photon-sensitive detectors are the most sensitive detectors possible, especially when multi-spatial mode receivers are employed to capture the maximum amount of scattered light. In addition to the beam directionality, we will also investigate deriving information about data modulation from the scattered laser beam. We will consider the impact of different wavelengths of operation and of different data modulation formats. Hardware will be developed to allow desired information to be acquired, including the unknown transmitted data rate.
