An evolving method to deploy new military space capabilities quickly is through the use of small satellites.Defense missions executed by these small satellites require the use of NSA approved cryptography.Larger satellites rely on purpose-built End Cryptographic Units (ECU) which have been certified by NSA.Although some smaller ECUs have been developed and recently certified, their impact on small satellite design remains challenging. It would be desirable to implement NSA approved cryptography without a dedicated ECU.This goal has proven challenging due to specific NSA requirements on how the cryptography must be implemented.Secmation proposes SoCrypt, a solution for high assurance software cryptography for small satellites.SoCrypts innovative security architecture leverages advanced software technologies to implement security adequate to support high assurance cryptography without an ECU using existing satellite processing resources maximizing flexibility in small satellite design.SoCrypt variants can run on legacy, radiation hardened processor designs or leverage hardware enforced security features of modern processors. In this Phase I program, a proof of concept design for SoCrypt will be implemented to quantify impact on satellite design and early NSA certification documentation prepared to reduce risk and ensure a valid NSA certification path.
