Abstract
Hydrogen peroxide is fast becoming the oxidant, bleach, disinfectant, and biocide of choice for treating aqueous waste streams. It is a powerful oxidizer, stronger than chlorine and chlorine dioxide, and as it decomposes into only oxygen and water, it avoids many of the toxicity and persistence issues associated with other chemical treatments. However, the use of hydrogen peroxide to treat wastewater and paper pulp as a chlorine substitute is limited by its cost. The aim of this SBIR program is to develop a revolutionary, cost-effective technology to produce hydrogen peroxide by using a lower cost feedstock, which has the potential to reduce operating costs significantly while also lowering safety hazards. The lower cost of production will allow wider use of hydrogen peroxide as a safe, non-polluting oxidizing alternative to chlorine.
