Abstract
Triton Systems Inc. will develop a modular and easily installed impact protection system for small unmanned aerial systems (SUAS), comprising a lattice array of pultruded S-2 Glass composite rods affixed to the SUAS body through socket retainers bonded to the SUAS.The rods will be formed into a cage providing sufficient stiffness and standoff to prevent damage to the SUAS under anticipated impact conditions.While the pultruded rods will remain elastic, the connections between rods will provide frictional energy absorption.During the Phase I Triton will perform rod-lattice design trades identifying impact energy absorption and rebound values for various impact scenarios.Static load-deflection tests of single arched rods and multiple rod assemblies will be conducted to validate design analyses.Candidate rod-lattice protection systems will be installed on a purchased drone and subjected to trial impacts to demonstrate concept feasibility at and above threshold impact velocity.In the Phase I Option, additional in-flight impacts will be conducted to evaluate performance over a range of impact angles and velocities.Installation and removal trials will also be conducted to develop assembly procedures.Triton will develop the manufacturing and kitting/assembly process to bring the estimated SUAS protection system cost to less than $100.
