The Navy has identified the need for a software enhancement to the DSSS mode wideband anti-jam modem (WAM) to optimize network performance of the SATCOM link. Traditional networking approaches are incapable of providing mission-efficient and resilient operations at low information rates. To overcome this limitation of the state of the art, Architecture Technology Corporation (ATCorp) developed an innovative modem-embeddable software algorithm called Transponded Satellite Communications Ad-hoc Networking Optimizer (T-SCANR) and established its implementation feasibility through rapid prototyping and analysis. The key innovations underlying the T-SCANR approach are a novel, extremely efficient networking scheme that enables seamless interoperation of DSSS WAM with ADNS while minimizing routing overhead in the DSSS network, and an ad-hoc networking capability that enables robust on-demand link establishment for scalable and resilient operation of multiple simplex links over the DSSS network. As a modular software service, the T-SCANR software can be implemented to run within the DSSS WAM hardware, enabling fast deployment of a cost-effective solution for improved SATCOM resource utilization. In the proposed Phase II effort, ATCorp will implement a full prototype of T-SCANR to transition the technology to the field to provide efficient and robust networking for DSSS WAM.
