Abstract
We propose Phase II Trials at 5 supporting AFBs for an air quality monitoring system, named Canary. This technology is a cost-effective, compact sensor system that measures particulate matter (PM) and gaseous pollutants in a variety of environments while providing a level of flexibility so far unseen in the air quality industry. This technology has a variety of established commercial use-cases and will be a valuable addition to military bases, airfields, and other Department of Defense (DoD) facilities that are at risk for elevated levels of pollution or dust/sand incursion. This information will be used to inform mitigation strategies to protect personnel health, as well as provide prognostic data for jet engines or equipment susceptible to the effects of particulate incursion. This system is also capable of incorporating gas sensors, such as O3, NO2, VOCs, and CO, which customers at USAF bases have voiced an interest in. An additional unique feature of the Canary is the ability to use sonic anemometers (wind speed and direction) to pinpoint the sources of pollution by triangulation methods. The Phase II Trials will not only allow for customization of this technology to meet USAF needs, but will also accelerate commercial expansion through R&D.
