Abstract
Tanner Research demonstrated an innovative active anti-fogging technique in Phase I that used electronic physics to preferentially couple (heating) energy into condensed droplets, enhancing droplet evaporation, rather than into heating the entire lens surface. The preferential evaporation operation was validated on fabricated glass wafers and recorded on video. One of the low power advantages of this technique is that it delivers power only when condensation is present. In this Phase II, Tanner will characterize the dynamic power consumption of this technique for de-fogging and implement it on prototype spectacles. The technology is retrofittable and can be compatible with existing military eyewear. Other goals in the Phase II will be to achieve the following metrics in preventing any occurrences of lenses fogging: Mechanical compatibility of fitting into current lenses and facilitate variable power-level operations for 36h+ periods. An active anti-fogging system has immense benefits in both the commercial and military sectors. Typical commercial markets include the $100+M snow sports market.Other ancilliary markets include scuba, hazardous equipment masks, and water sports eyewear.
