The goal of this STTR effort is to design a portable, multimodal, non-contact imaging system for burn depth diagnosis and tracking of wound healing. UC and Vanderbilt University will build upon our previous efforts demonstrated via porcine model studies to combine results from structural B-mode optical coherence tomography (OCT) images and functional data (pulse speckle imaging- PSI) to classify different burn wounds (full-thickness, partial-thickness and superficial-burn wounds). In Phase I, the team will also explore spectral (Raman Spectroscopy) imaging in combination with B-mode OCT and PSI to further improve our classification via in vitro studies.Based on requirement gathering from USAISR, the team will produce designs of the proposed Phase II prototype for triaging in far-forward scenarios. By end of Phase I, we will determine the cost vs. performance trade-offs of adding candidate modalities to the envisioned prototype. Phase II will involve pre-clinical and human pilot studies with the developed Phase I prototype.
