AbstractThe overall goal of this proposed program is to develop a novel fiberoptic communication link operating in the millimeter wave range at high power levels. The components developed include a microchip laser in a millimeter wave cavity and a Fabry-Perot modulator. The optical transmitter will operate in the 40 to 100 GHz range with at least 20% information bandwidth at optical power levels of 200mW or higher. The links shall have inherently low noise characteristics and high linearity, and they will be efficiently integrated with the millimeter wave components. Phase I is a feasibility study, i.e., the design of a high power optical transmitter for millimeter wave frequencies, while Phase I Option is the proof-of-concept demonstration which characterizes and demonstrates that the transmiter/modulator works.
