Research Institution
AeroMed Software, L.L.C., proposes to develop an interactive virtual environment simulator for vertical aircraft signal training. The proposed system is intended to provide Landing Signal Enlisted (LSE) trainees with a dynamic training device similar to the operational flight trainers used by aviators. Recent advances in data acquisition, signal processing and graphics software, computer processing power and biomedical engineering will be combined to create a realistic simulation of LSE duties in the shipboard helicopter operations. The proposed device will respond to standardized hand and wand signals from the LSE trainee and parameter changes from the instructor. The display device will interface with existing flight deck protective equipment in order to more realistically simulate the actual flight deck environment. The main objective of the Phase I effort will be to investigate current emerging and novel technologies in the data acquisition and virtual environment/virtual reality and determine their appropriateness for incorporation in the proposed device. The configuration of the proposed system will be evaluated in terms of direct compatibility with present and projected Navy training systems. The potential integration of the proposed system with fleet units will also be evaluated on the basis of available computer resources and minimized additional expense.
