The Situation Awareness Flight Training Evaluator (SAFTE) is a synthetic task representation of a general purpose combat aircraft flight trainer that is based on a 386/486 IBM PC mircocomputer. SAFTE is designed to teach, evaluate, and select the basic piloting and situation awareness (SA) skills appropriate to the performance of air-to-air and air-to-ground missions under multiple threat environments. SAFTE consists of an instructional system, a flight simulator, and multiple situation awareness measures, which are integrated together to provide the subject with a progressive series of monitored exercises and mission scenarios. Resulting performance data will allow investigators to examine subject mental models with respect to different test paradigms within SA.
