Abstract
The need exists for a low-density and low-conductivity spray-in-place thermal barrier coating for application to aluminum and composite aircraft surfaces. Fiber Materials, Inc. (FMI®) has a family of commercial thermal barrier systems, designated FlexFram™, which are TRL9/MRL10 Navy-qualified thermal barrier coatings originally developed for protection of ship surfaces from rocket motor blasts of missile launching systems. The objective of this program is to utilize FMI’s Navy-qualified sprayable FlexFram 605 and modify its constituents to achieve the thermal barrier coating specifications desired for this application. Specifically, it is FMI’s goal for the Phase I effort to create a formulation of FlexFram that meets the desired density and thermal requirements, and assess the feasibility of spray application.
