Abstract
This Phase I project develops a prototype FluidMath software application and demonstrates its feasibility as an intervention in the teaching and learning of basic algebra. At its core, the prototype includes a first of its kind recognition engine which enables a Tablet PC to interpret mathematical expressions written on its screen with an electronic stylus. In addition, the prototype will include software built on the recognition engine for the teaching of algebra. Employing the prototype, a teacher or a student, using their own handwriting can easily create, solve, graph and animate algebraic problems drawn on the screen of the Tablet PC.
