Abstract
PRESENT METHODS FOR PREPARING THE NUCLEAR POWER INDUSTRIES LOW LEVEL SPENT RESIN RADWASTE FOR BURIAL DISPOSAL HAVE CREATED A PROBLEM IN TERMS OF LARGE WASTE VOLUME AND INABILITY TO MEET FEDERAL REGULATIONS CONTROLLING WASTE CHARACTERISTICS. FOSTER-MILLER, INC. HAS CONCEIVED A NOVEL CENTRIFUGAL TECHNIQUE FOR SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCING THE RADWASTE VOLUME AND ASSOCIATED DISPOSAL COST WHILE PRODUCING A WASTE THAT COMPLIES WITH ALL PRESENT REGULATIONS. BY UTILIZING THE FINAL DISPOSAL DRUM AS THE MAIN ROTATING ELEMENT THE CENTRIFUGAL PACKING ACTION ON THE SOLIDS CAN REDUCE THE FINAL WASTE VOLUME BY UP TO 50 PERCENT. IF THIS CONCEPT IS SUCCESSFULLY DEMONSTRATED, COMMERCIAL USE BY EVERY U.S. NUCLEAR POWER PLANT IS EXPECTED.
