Abstract
THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROGRAM IS TO PERFORM A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF HOW TO OPTIMIZE THE COUPLING EFFICIENCY OF A SINGLE MODE FIBER AND A SINGLE MODE LASER DIODE OPERATING AT A WAVELENGTH OF 1.3UM. A PROTOTYPE HERMETICALLY SEALABLE PACKAGE WILL BE BUILT FOR MEASURING IMPORTANT PARAMETERS THAT WILL AFFECT THE COUPLING EFICIENCYTHE FEASIBILITY OF DESIGNING A HERMETICALLY SEALED PACKAGE WITH A COUPLING EFFICIENCY OF OVER 50% WHICH CAN WITHSTAND TEMPERATURE CYCLING OF -40 DEGREES CELCIUS TO +80 DEGREES CELCIUS WILL BE ESTABLISHED.
