Abstract
THIS PROPOSAL DESCRIBES THE EFFORTS REQUIRED TO STUDY THE EFFECTS OF VARIOUS MATERIALS ON THE REDUCTION OF ELECTRONIC INTERFACE IN THE PLASMA OF A RE-ENTRY VEHICLE HEAT SHIELD. A FUNDEMENTAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE MECHANISM BY MEANS OF WHICH THESE MATERIALS ACHIEVE A REDUCTION IN ELECTRONIC INTERFERENCE IS THE GOAL OF THE PROPOSED INVESTIGATIONS, IN WHICH THE GSI FLAME TEST APPARATUS IS USED TO DETERMINE INITIAL CHARACTERISTICS, FOLLOWED BY AN ELUCIDATION OF MECHANISMS OF MATERIAL BEHAVIOR AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES.
