Research Institution
The goal of the proposed program is the development of an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) which uses an electrochemical capacitor as the charge storage device. A novel low-cost metal oxide-solid polymer electrolyte combination will be investigated during the Phase I feasibility study. This innovation is based on Giner, Inc.'s extensive knowledge in electrode materials and solid polymer electrolyte processing. The Phase I objectives include demonstration of the feasibility of low-cost electrode materials in conjunction with advanced solid polymer electrolytes; evaluation of new capacitor charging processes, fabrication and test of single cell capacitors and fabrication and test of a breadboard UPS system which utilizes an capacitor stack as the charge storage device. Low-cost catalytic materials will be prepared by select methods and evaluated for their performance in conjunction with advanced solid polymer electrolytes. Those combinations of materials exhibiting the highest performance will be formed into a multi-cell capacitor stach, which will be tested in a brassboard UPS system.
