Abstract
Very Low Frequency (VLF) and Low Frequency (LF) reception suffers from interference of atmospheric noise caused by lightning, which occurs year round. In this proposal we investigate innovative mitigation methods that have the potential of suppressing atmospheric noise in LF/VLF communications. Performance objective is to improve routine VLF and LF reception in natural atmospheric noise conditions that will permit greater communications range and to reduce the cost of providing electrical power to the Navy fixed VLF and LF transmitters. Extensive computer simulations will be performed to evaluate the developed methods, and a final recommendation will be provided at the end of Phase I.
