Abstract
The research is to develop a sheet flow sampler to collect highway washoff and to operate in a highway roadside environment. The proposed sampler is expendable, simple, and cost effective. It will collect a predetermined depth of runoff (most commonly the first 1/2 inch of "first flush"), store it, and be removed and replaced by maintenance workers following rain events. The sampler will be its own vessel for transport of its contents to a laboratory for analysis. Phase I will test, refine and evaluate, stainless steel prototypes. Phase II will initiate manufacture of plastic injection copies, will develop channels of distribution, and will write operators' field manuals for installation and sample handling.
