Abstract
FLIGHT SIMULATION IS A PRIMARY AND CRITICAL FORM OF TRAINING. HOWEVER, CURRENT SIMULATORS HAVE NOT YET BEEN INTEGRATED WITH COMPUTER-BASED TRAINING (CBT) TECHNOLOGY. THIS MEANS THAT AUTHORING TOOLS AND OTHER TYPICAL CBT CAPABILITIES SUCH AS PERFORMANCE MONITORING, GIVING ADVISE TO STUDENTS AND ANSWERING QUESTIONS, AND RECORD KEEPING FUNCTIONS ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR TRAINING WITH SIMULATORS. WE BELIEVE THAT FUTURE SIMULATORS WILL INCORPORATE THESE FUNCTIONS. WE PROPOSE TO INTEGRATE THE ACCORD CBT AUTHORING/DELIVERY SYSTEM WITH CURRENT FLIGHT SIMULATORS. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS, WE HAVE DETERMINED THAT INTELLIGENT COMPUTER-ASSISTED INSTRUCTION (ICAI) IS THE BEST APPROACH. USING AN EXPERT SYSTEM, WE WILL BEGIN WITH POST-LESSON EVALUATION OF A SHUTTLE MISSION SIMULATOR (SMS) LESSON USING THE SIMULATOR'S"DATA STORE" CAPABILITY. OTHER PHASES OF THE RESEARCH WILL MOVE TO REAL-TIME EVALUATION, GENERIC AUTHORING TOOLS INTEGRATED WITH ACCORD FOR CREATING SUCH ICAI EVALUATION PROGRAMS, AND FINALLY TOOLS FOR CREATING LESSON SCRIPTS AND REMEDIAL TUTORING CAPABILITIES. SUCH PROGRAMS COULD ALSO BE MODIFIED FOR IN-FLIGHT ADVISORS. FINALLY, THE EXPERIENCES GAINED DURING THE INTEGRATION OF A CBT SYSTEM WITH EXISTING SIMULATORS WILL PROVIDE VALUABLE INFORMATION FOR FUTURE SIMULATORS (WITH CBT COMPONENTS).
