Abstract
The Department of Defense has mandated that all future combat systems operate on kerosene based fuels (ie JP-5, JP-8, DF-2, F-76, etc..) The Navy has numerous small craft that are currently gasoline powered and are no longer acceptable in the fleet. This phase II proposal outlines a project to meet the future DoD fuel requirements by development of high-speed direct fuel injection and multi-fuel combustion system suitable for universal applications ranging from 5-200hp. Proven innovations in multi-fuel combustion will be scaled up and applied to a commercial Mercury Optimax 115 two cycle engine core in order to demonstrate the desired power on heavy fuel. This newly released production 1.5 liter 3 cylinder engine will address both the outboard and inboard motor applications on heavy fuels. Domestic suppliers for both the PWC hull and COTS engine will ensure future military and commercial markets.
