Abstract

HyPerComp, a premiere developer of innovative and highly scalable computational environments for time-domain electromagnetics, proposes to develop, demonstrate and deliver the next generation TEMPUS (Time-Domain EM Parallel Unstructured Simulator)environment to perform cost-effective and routine X-band to 20 GHz computations for full-scale targets with general materials to provide highly accurate wide band data for automatic target recognition (ATR) training and evaluation. The applicationsinclude 1) broadband radar scatter from general targets, 2) SAR images and range profiles, 3) modeling of targets under trees (TUT) and buried objects, and 3) antenna radiation modeling and coupling with structures. Some of the key technologies to beincorporated into TEMPUS are 1) automated geometry modeling and grid generation for complex structures, 2) higher-order algorithms that preserve phase and amplitude of waves propagating over long distances, 3) material modeling for targets in stratifiedmedia, and 4) a PC-cluster-based scalable, parallel and portable software architecture for large scale simulations.The TEMPUS environment will be supported by a suite of graphical user interface (GUI) tools with online manuals covering the entire process, which includes the Preprocessing Stage (CAD repair, grid generation and parallel domain decomposition), the RunStage (boundary condition and other run parameter set up, interactive and batch job set up), and the Postprocessing Stage (data extraction for solution visualization, animation, performance analysis and results). The technology is ITAR restricted and itsdistribution will be controlled by the Target Modeling Group at WPAFB.
