West Coast Solutions (WCS), in collaboration with American Lithium Energy (ALE) and Space Micro, proposes the adaptation and packaging of the ALE Lithium Ion Battery Supercapacitor Hybrid (LIBSH). In Phase I we will tune the energy storage (battery) and power (supercapacitor) internal cell layup to meet the topic requirements, define a radiation hard battery management system (BMS) approach, and combine those results into a complete Hybrid Battery-Supercapacitor spaceflight-compatible concept design in preparation for Phase II. Critical components will be demonstrated in the laboratory for risk reduction in preparation for the Phase II prototype. The WCS-ALE-Space Micro Team brings proven hybrid cell technology, extensive experience developing and deploying space-borne hardware and electronics, and to help ensure a viable transition path, a proven space hardware manufacturing capability. With expertise spanning electrochemistry, BMS electronics, and space hardware manufacturing, this team is well poised to deliver a fully compliant, producible prototype design concept in Phase I (TRL 4) and a fully qualified HBS prototype in Phase II (TRL 6).
