Abstract

West Coast Solutions (WCS), in collaboration with American Lithium Energy (ALE) and Space Micro, proposes the adaptation and packaging of the ALE Lithium Ion Battery Supercapacitor Hybrid (LIBSH). In Phase I we will tune the energy storage (battery) and power (supercapacitor) internal cell layup to meet the topic requirements, define a radiation hard battery management system (BMS) approach, and combine those results into a complete Hybrid Battery-Supercapacitor spaceflight-compatible concept design in preparation for Phase II. Critical components will be demonstrated in the laboratory for risk reduction in preparation for the Phase II prototype. The WCS-ALE-Space Micro Team brings proven hybrid cell technology, extensive experience developing and deploying space-borne hardware and electronics, and to help ensure a viable transition path, a proven space hardware manufacturing capability. With expertise spanning electrochemistry, BMS electronics, and space hardware manufacturing, this team is well poised to deliver a fully compliant, producible prototype design concept in Phase I (TRL 4) and a fully qualified HBS prototype in Phase II (TRL 6). Approved for Public Release | 18-MDA-9817 (23 Oct 18)
