Abstract

To address the U.S. Navy’s unmet need for robust, compact transmitters for photonics links, in this SBIR, a wavelength-selectable shot-noise-limited fiber-pigtailed ultra-compact diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) laser transmitter optimized for wideband radio-frequency (RF) photonics in military communications and electronic warfare systems will be developed. Leveraging robust, compact DPSS laser designs, already in high-volume production, which are efficient and have good beam quality, in Phase I, high-average-power DPSS laser designs will be modeled, fabricated, and characterized. Measured performance will be used to update the models and optimize the DPSS laser design to achieve high performance over the wide operating temperature range.
