Abstract

Vadum will develop and mature the Threat Prediction for Air Defense (TPAD) algorithms which calculate Predicted Intercept Points (PIPs) to support AEGIS Combat System engagements of air defense threats. The TPAD algorithms monitor incoming tracks and compare the tracks to an internal database of threat motion. TPAD predicts the future state of the threat at a desired range from the firing ship based on the similarity of the track to the internal database entries and reports the predicted state as a PIP. The PIP is transmitted to downstream components in order to provide an aiming and guidance solution to the AEGIS Combat System. The use of a PIP-based guidance system decreases the likelihood that an interceptor will spend energy responding to evasive threat motion. The preserved energy can be used either to complete the terminal phase of missile flight or to extend the engagement envelope of a given missile. During the Phase II program Vadum will work with the prime AEGIS contractor and the Government to test the TPAD algorithms against high fidelity threat representations in high fidelity test environments. The test campaign will result in the data required to support a Phase III transition decision.
