Abstract

Vadum will develop the Prediction, Optimization, and Scheduling of System Engagements (POSSE) algorithms in order to efficiently and effectively schedule AEGIS Combat System engagements of closely spaced air defense threats. The POSSE algorithms model dense air defense engagements as a graph of connected engagement opportunities. Using graph traversal algorithms, the optimal set of engagement opportunities which both maximizes probability of kill and minimizes the likelihood of engagement interference can be determined. The optimal set of engagement opportunities can then be transmitted to downstream AEGIS Combat System elements to complete the engagements. The POSSE algorithms will increase AEGIS Combat System performance in a dense raid environment by intelligently determining optimal engagements. In Phase II, Vadum will continue to develop POSSE to increase its performance and mature the algorithms through a test campaign coordinated with the AEGIS prime contractor and the Government. The test campaign will provide the data necessary for continuous algorithm improvement and to support a Phase III transition decision.
