Abstract
The team of AlphaMicron Inc. and Kent State University proposes a novel LC technology, the dynamic polarizer, as a light control system for Battlefield Airmen and Pilots. The dynamic polarizer technology shares the performance capabilities of AlphaMicron’s e-Tint LC light control technology: instantaneously fails-to-clear, millisecond switching times, and customizable tint and color. However, the dynamic polarizer improves on the performance by expanding the transmission window and providing the capability of continuously adjustable transmission levels for the operator. The technical objectives of the Phase I work will focus on investigating all factors impacting the transmission window of the device. This work includes modeling device performance, testing new plastic substrates and conductive layer materials, developing liquid crystal mixtures, and preparing prototype devices. Work completed over the course of the Phase I program will establish a performance baseline for the dynamic polarizer, as well as establish a catalog of component materials for next generation eyewear and display visor light control films utilizing dynamic polarizer technology.
