Abstract
THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROGRAM IS TO DEVELOP PERSONALCOMPUTER AND MINICOMPUTER INFORMATION RETRIEVAL SYSTEMS FOR CANCER INFORMATION. ONE UNIQUE FEATURE OF THESE SYSTEMS WILL BE THEIR USE OF CD/ROM STORAGE TECHNOLOGY, WHICH PROVIDES A STORAGE CAPACITY OF OVER 500 MEGABYTES; IT IS EXPENSIVE, AND CONNECTS EASILY TO BOTH PERSONAL COMPUTERS AND MINICOMPUTERS. THIS PHASE I STUDY WILL DEVELOP COMPLETESPECIFICATIONS AND COST ANALYSES FOR TWO KINDS OF SYSTEMS. THE FIRST IS A MICROCOMPUTER RETRIEVAL SYSTEM FOR PERSONAL COMPUTER USERS; THE SECOND IS A MINICOMPUTER RETRIEVAL SYSTEM FOR MULTI-USER ENVIRONMENTS. IN ADDITION, IN PHASE I, A PROTOTYPE OF THE MICROCOMPUTER RETRIEVAL SYSTEM WILL BEDEVELOPED AND DEMONSTRATED THAT WILL ACCESS PORTIONS OF THE PHYSICIAN'S DATA QUERY (PDQ) AND CANCERLIT DATABASES AND FULL-TEXT JOURNAL ARTICLES. IN THE EVENT OF A PHASE II AWARD, A COMPLETE SOFTWARE SET FOR BOTH MICROCOMPUTER AND MINICOMPUTER RETRIEVAL SYSTEMS WILL BE GENERATED. THESE SYSTEMS WILL PROVIDE USERS WITH LOW COST ACCESS TO INFORMATION WITHOUT THE NEED FOR ANY TELECOMMUNICATIONS LINKTO A CENTRAL INFORMATION SOURCE AND WILL ALLOW A WIDER AUDIENCE TO HAVE ACCESS TO CANCER PREVENTION AND CONTROL INFORMATION.
