Abstract
THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROPOSED EFFORT ARE TO INCREASE THE EFFICIENCY, REDUCE POWER SUPPLY SIZE, AND SHOW HYPERVELOCITY FEASIBILITY OF ELECTROMAGNETIC RAILGUNS. OUR APPROACH IS TO USE A NOVEL CONFIGURAITON OF HIGHLY COUPLED CONDUCTORS WHICH RESULT IN NEAR ZERO RESIDUAL MAGNETIC ENERGY IN THE RAILGUN, AT PROJECTILE LAUNCH. SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS CONCEPT WILL GREATLY IMPROVE RAILGUN EFFICIENCY, LEADING TO MUCH SMALLER POWER SUPPLY SIZE. THE APPROACH WILL WORK FOR HYPERVELOCITY, AS WELL AS FOR LOWER VELOCITY LAUNCH REGIMES.
