AbstractThe objective of this SBIR Phase 2 is to develop the materials and processes technology required to scale-up electromagnetic (EM) railgun insulator technology developed during the Phase 1. The two major advancements in railgun insulator technology made during the Phase 1 were at least a tenfold improvement in insulator life, along with a demonstration of the fabrication process to make full length (i.e., 3.5 m), one-piece insulators. During the Phase 2 project, the insulator technology will be developed for larger scale railguns. Insulators for railgun bore sizes up to 90 mm will be built and tested. The anticipated benefit of this project to the Navy is a significant step toward weaponizing EM railguns. Limited railgun bore life is one of the key hurdles preventing railgun weaponization. Improved insulators will address one of these hurdles.
