Abstract

This effort will develop a robust test device to eliminate issues associated with the current U.S. Air Force RamGun. The current RamGun is used to evaluate aircraft structural joints when exposed to ballistic threat-induced hydrodynamic ram pressures. Skyward will fully develop a Phase I concept to modify the device, isolating wave propagation through the fluid from a simulated hydrodynamic ram event from waves propagating through the RamGun structure or produced by inaccurate interactions within the RamGun column of fluid. Skyward will also complete and validate the development of a modeling and simulation process for performing pretest predictions and post-test analysis associated with the modified device. Phase II will involve the maturing of the Phase I concept to include additional research, design, fabrication, test, and modeling and simulation of the test event. The modified device will be integrated with the RamGun and proof-of-concept testing will take place in the first year. Modifications and enhancements will be integrated into the design and final demonstration testing will take place in the second year. Modeling and simulation techniques will also be improved upon. A final prototype test device will be delivered to the customer at the end of Phase II , enabling in-house testing.
