Abstract

The limited dynamic range of the current sensors used in high-energy laser (HEL) engagement reduces track fidelity and compromises aimpoint stability. To address this opportunity, a high-dynamic-range InGaAs avalanche photodiode (APD) short-wave-infrared (SWIR) camera will be developed for active-illumination fine tracking in HEL systems. In Phase I, working with the U.S. Army stakeholders, the specifications and development of an image sensor architecture will be refined. Theoretical and numerical calculations will be performed that explore the trade space available to HEL engagements. The readout circuit architecture will be developed, key circuits will be simulated, and demonstration of proof-of-concept will be performed.
