Abstract
A PROGRAM IS PROPOSED TO DEVELOP AN INFRARED THERMAL INSPECTION APPLICATION FOR THE EXAMINATION OF BARE AND COATED FIBERGLASS HULL STRUCTURES. PRIOR WORK HAS DEMONSTRATED THE APPLICABILITY OF THE INFRARED APPROACH TO THE INSPECTION OF THIS TYPE OF MATERIAL. SEVERAL TECHNIQUESWILL BE EVALUATED FOR THE APPLICATION OF THE THERMAL LOAD NEEDED TO PERFORM THE TEST. INFRARED THERMOGRAPHY OFFERS VERY RADIP INSPECTION OF RELATIVELY LARGE STRUCTURES AND HASSHOWN GOOD SENSITIVITY TO A NUMBER OF THE FLAW TYPES OF INTEREST. PC BASED VIDEO FRAME DIGITIZERS AND IMAGE PROCESSING SOFTWARE WILL BE EVALUATED FOR THE ANALYSIS OF THE INFRARED IMAGES. CONCEPTS FOR AN INFRERED IMAGE DATA BASE TO PROMOTE THE USE AS A MAINTENANCE TRACKING SYSTEM WILL BE INVESTIGATED. A PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF A FIBERGLASS HULL INSPECTION SYSTEM WILL BE DEVELOPED TO ILLUSTRATE THE PRACTICALITY OF USE IN THE FIELD.
