Abstract
THIS PROJECT IS INTENDED TO RESULT IN AN INFRARED FIBER LASER CATHETER FOR USE IN LASER ANGIOPLASTY, OPHTHALMIC SURGERY, NEUROSURGERY, AND ENDOSCOPIC MICROSURGERY WHERE PRECISION OF TISSUE REMOVAL IS A NECESSITY. THE FIBER WILL BE MADE FROM ZIRCONIUM FLUORIDE GLASS, WHICH HAS VERY LOW LOSS AT 2.9 MICRONS, THE WAVELENGTH OF MAXIMUM TISSUE ABSORPTION. IMPROVEMENTS WILL BE MADE IN THE FIBER STRENGTH, CHEMICAL DURABILITY, AND LASER DAMAGE THRESHOLD. THIS WILL BE DONE BY DEVELOPING IMPROVED GLASS-PROCESSING TECHNIQUES BASED ON INFRARED FIBER SYSTEMS, INC.'S EXPERIENCE IN WORKING WITH HEAVY METAL FLUORIDE GLASS AND DEVELOPING WATERPROOF COATINGS TO PROVIDE CHEMICAL DURABILITY. THE RESULTING FIBER WILL BE USABLE WITH A PULSED ER:YAG LASER.
