Abstract
The U.S. Department of Energy aims to minimize our reliance on petroleum and natural gas, and to mitigate the adverse environmental impacts resulting from fossil fuel combustion. In this project, photocatalytic reduction technology will be developed for transforming atmospheric CO2 to commodity fuels and chemical products. The approach will utilize efficient and durable photo-electrochemical (PEC) cells in which a visible-light-active nanotubular photoanode and photocathode directly convert CO2 to CH3OH and water to hydrogen. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The PEC technology should provide benefits for transportation, vehicles, utility industries, buildings, and homes, and minimize the buildup of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. In addition, the technology should lead to the establishment of green manufacturing and alternative sources of energy, thereby minimizing the need for fuel imports.
